Dr. Cheryl Poon

Biography

At a young age, Dr. Cheryl had her eyes set on being a dentist. During her childhood visits to the dentist, she was a ‘touch-it-all’ child and she became completely fascinated with all the cool toys and gadgets.

Dr. Cheryl was able to pursue her dreams of dentistry when she was accepted into an accelerated program that allowed her to become a dentist in 7 years instead of 8 years. Even with being enrolled in an accelerated program, Dr. Cheryl graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNY Geneseo with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She then moved on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in which she was top 10 in her class and was also inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.

It was during her General Practice Residency in Newark that she discovered her passion for treating children. Dr. Cheryl still fondly remembers treating a scared, crying little girl in which she was able to channel her long lost creativity to conjure an amusing appointment full of sleepy teeth, sugar bugs and princess castles. She continued her journey to pursue her pediatric dental training at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center and served as Chief Resident in her second year. Dr. Cheryl understands that every child is unique and needs tender love and care tailored to their individual needs.

In Dr. Cheryl’s spare time, she enjoys attending concerts, watching movies, baking, and traveling the world one country at a time. She is also very passionate about giving back to her community and regularly volunteers to provide dental care to underserved populations. For four consecutive years, Dr. Cheryl was an essential part of an outreach group that travels to Guatemala annually to treat the population that otherwise has no access to dental care.

It is a pleasure to have Dr. Cheryl join the Little Smiles team and we are excited to see what she has in store for us. We are very confident in that she will meet all of your children’s needs!
