Many parents are surprised to learn that the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

At this age, most children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, allowing an orthodontist to identify developing issues that may not be obvious to parents or even during routine dental visits. Early evaluation can help detect problems such as crowding, crossbites, impacted teeth, jaw growth discrepancies, and habits that may affect proper dental development.

It's important to know that an evaluation at age 7 does not mean your child will need braces right away. In fact, most children do not begin treatment at this age. Instead, the visit allows the orthodontist to monitor growth and determine the ideal timing for treatment if it becomes necessary.

Early detection can sometimes make treatment simpler, shorter, and more effective. By identifying concerns before they become more severe, we can help guide proper jaw development and create the best foundation for a healthy, confident smile.

If your child is around age 7 and has not yet had an orthodontic evaluation, now is the perfect time to schedule a complimentary consultation.
